Why “Shaping” Isn’t Just a Warm-Up - It’s the Foundation of Excellence in Cheerleading

If you’re a parent new to cheerleading, you might be surprised by what you see at the start of a CheerCore Jags class. Athletes holding strong positions, reaching tall, or balancing in precise shapes. It may look simple, but this early part of class is one of the most important things we do.

Shaping isn’t a warm-up. It’s training.

In cheerleading and tumbling, every skill, whether it’s a handstand, a cartwheel, or a full tumbling pass, is built from smaller body positions called shapes. When athletes learn to control those shapes with precision, they build the strength, coordination, and awareness they need to safely and confidently perform skills.

Think of it like learning to spell. You can’t write words until you know your letters. Shaping teaches athletes the “alphabet” of movement, the essential positions that form every skill.

At the beginning of every practice, shaping drills train muscles to activate in the right sequence, strengthen mind-body connection, and improve strength and mobility. This foundation helps athletes move with control, reduce injury risk, and progress through skills more effectively.

At CheerCore in Collingwood, we believe this early part of practice is where excellence begins. Shaping reflects the same core values we bring into every aspect of training:

  • 100% Effort: Every repetition counts when athletes give their best.

  • Integrity: We focus on doing things right, even when no one is watching.

  • Perseverance: Progress takes patience and consistency.

  • Excellence: Great athletes are built on great fundamentals.

  • Accountability: Every athlete owns their growth and success.

Parents often notice how quickly their child gains strength and confidence through our cheerleading and tumbling programs. What they might not realize is that shaping plays a major role in that development. This work teaches focus, control, and pride in personal progress,  skills that go far beyond the gym.

When you see shaping at the start of a practice, know that it’s not “just a warm-up.” It’s a focused training block that builds safer, stronger, and more capable athletes. It’s how CheerCore helps young athletes develop physical literacy, confidence, and discipline through cheerleading and tumbling.

At CheerCore, we start strong so athletes can stay strong, in body and mind.
